Britney’s Trial Resumes

This might just be the most useless use of court time and money that the state of California has ever seen. Well, I am sure if you check the record books, there may be something even more useless than this one, but it will probably take you some time to find it. We all remember the incident where Britney backed into a parked vehicle last August, and at the time she did not have a California driver’s license. The lack of the driving license is what is causing the big broo ha ha, and while most citizens of California would be facing a misdemeanour charge and a fine on this issue, folks like Britney Spears get a full blown jury trial over the matter. Sounds like the case has been heard and the jury are in deliberations as we speak, sort of. In a closing argument that lasted all of …wait for it…thirty minutes, prosecutor Michael Amerian told the jurors that Britney needed to be convicted of the misdemeanour because of her lack of license. And yes, he must really be out to get her if it took him all of THIRTY MINUTES to pound the point into the juror’s minds. Jury deliberation started on Friday, and then went a whole two hours of deliberating without reaching a verdict, so, they were dismissed for the weekend and will resume deliberations on Monday. The issue behind the drivers license stems from the fact that at the time, while Britney did not have a California license, she DID have a Louisiana license. The prosecutor is trying to get the idea across that Britney considers herself to be a California resident, and not a resident of Louisiana. The fact that she applied for, but didn’t get, her California license 4 months prior to the incident is not helping her, as it shows intent on her behalf to stay in California. And the fact that since then, she HAS received a California license furthers that point. Her defense is resting on the fact that Britney actually considers herself to be a Louisiana native and resident and has always been considering ‘going back home’. Her lawyers say:

Spears doesn’t want to be here (in California). She’s a Louisiana girl. She’s only here because of her custody case. She keeps thinking, maybe next month I can go home.”

However, the prosecutor says that her daddy’s testimony is the only evidence that she even had a Louisiana license at the time. Odd isn’t it, you would think there would be records of something to that nature. I am rolling my eyes big time on this one, this is all so ridiculous. A jury trial on a misdemeanour. If she is convicted, she will face up to six months in jail, and a $1000 fine. If she had been a normal citizen, she would have had to pay a $10 fine on the misdemeanour charge and appear in court swearing it would never happen again. Nice.
